Mauricio Pochettino Press Conference After Tottenham Ended Chelsea’s Unbeaten Run

Is that the best performance of the season?

I don’t believe, the performance was good but I don’t believe it was the best performance.

What was the best performance?

I don’t know. The next one maybe?

What should the score have been?

The reality is 3-1, you cannot talk about what should be possible or not. he result is ok, we are so happy, very pleased. I don’t need to talk too much because the players did the talking on the pitch and they deserve the full credit. We are so happy now and thinking of the next game on Wednesday.

You saw how well your plan was working…..

No it was not my plan. When you win it looks like the plan was the best from the manager, for me it was about the attitude that a lot of times we have missed in many important games. To compete in this way the tactic or the system are not important because the attitude and the win was fantastic. Now the challenge for us is to keep that level of competition to try and increase and keep because we have talent. The most importan thing is the three points that puts us in a good position in the table. We need to use at some point for the future. We are going to have in a few days a final and then against Arsenal, with this attitude all is possible.

Son’ first league goal, how do you feel about it?

I don’t need to say too much. He was fantastic, like all the team. The goal he scored and everything was working tonight. It is completely unfair to say, ‘Yes our idea, how we prepared the game, the plan, the tactic was fantastic’. No, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. You can see on the pitch, Son’s performance was fantastic and you can see he deserved it because the summer for him was very difficult. In the last international break he was here, training hard. It is one of the reasons today that he showed he is fresh, his physical condition is much beytteer and I think it is going to help him for the rest of the season.

He is saying your formation was different?

Because we don’t use a fixed formation, if you follow us in all the games we play in the Champions League, cup and Premier League we don’t talk about formation, we talk about tactic or animation. We talk about how we play ina different way with possession in the opposite half, how we organise the team in a defensive situation when we don’t have the ball. I repeat, I don’t know what he said. Maybe it is difficult to see what Tottenham made on the pitch.

What did you make of Juan Foyth’s performance today in a big game and his development in recent weeks?

Yeah, but always it’s the same. We can’t play with 14 or 15 players from the beginning of the game. I think for Juan to play another needs to rest or another needs to be out of the team. Of course we trust in all the players but in the same way when we take the decision to put one or another on the pitch it’s because we really believe that they can play well. I think today he was fantastic, maybe a few actions, but it was his third Premier League game and yes a lot of things have happened in the last few months for him. But I think the confidence we have in him and trust is why we put him in to play and I think today it’s about confirming that it’s not about the names on the pitch. It’s about the right attitude.

When you have 24 or 25 players to talk about their names is a little bit unfair and the same the fans or the people that have predilections for some player. We need to assess and look after all the players and we need to manage the situation because we spend 12 hours every day with them and I think all the managers and the coaching staff we want to win. But of course today because of many things I am so happy, in the same way I am so relaxed because using different animation to play or different names on the pitch were capable of winning or losing. But one thing we need to realise is with the right attitude we are a team that can compete in this level but the problem is when we struggle to show the real quality because we show a lack of aggression, will or attitude. In that moment it’s difficult to perform in the way we performed today.

There were many empty seats today for a big game, do you expect more to come for the Inter game?

It’s difficult for our fans to come here to Wembley. I understand completely the frustration, disappointed that we are still not in the new stadium. But I cannot ask for more from our fans. I am so happy with the people who came here and helped us and I’m going to be happy on Wednesday if 50,000 or 60,000 come or it’s full. Of course I will be more happy if we are capable of being 90,000 at Wembley helping the team to achieve the victory but if not it’s nothing to complain about. I think our fans are doing a fantastic job, helping us and I think we cannot ask for more.
